Experimental documentary series – in progress
With Gaspar Tamper
In the 19th century, inspired by Paris, France saw the emergence of a new form of recreation that had previously been reserved for an elite few. The pleasure of a stroll in the park—contemplating nature that had been domesticated and arranged specifically for human viewing—became accessible to the masses: this marked the birth of public gardens.
Two centuries later, at the dawn of the 21st century, a pandemic reveals the gradual desertion of these gardens. In the shadow of this phenomenon, other forms of nature emerge as substitutes: the virtual worlds of video games explore the past and the future, depict impossible worlds, and transport us to the far reaches of a nature that is both hostile and programmed. A promise that gardens can no longer fulfill. For this shift in habits resonates strangely with another metamorphosis: that of our very environment, of this nature that we have so long sought to domesticate, and which appears increasingly hostile.
Through the mythological tale of a young girl searching for a mysterious prophet in a deserted garden-world, the series documents this transformation of our societies and explores what these new digital pastimes reveal about our relationship with a nature that is collapsing.
